So I had NO idea I was in labor. We were doing some nursery prep Sunday morning. Then Sunday afternoon I noticed a teeny tiny (think: paper cut) amount of blood when I went to the bathroom. I wasn't overly worried but we figured I should call the doctor anyway. She said we should head to the hospital to "be safe." We (my mom, Amy Dorsheimer, Richard and I) went to the hospital, assuming it was just going to be a good test run - and we'd be headed to Olive Garden for carryout afterwards. Richard was a bit more nervous than us, but we assured him all was well.
We get to the hospital and in very short order I'm hooked up to all the monitors. The nurses tell me I'll be going home that evening. An hour later and my contractions are 3-4 minutes apart - mind you - I didn't even know I was having them! They'd ask me my pain level on a scale of 0-10 and I'd say zero. The on-call doc checks me out and surprise I'm 7 centimeters dialated! I had NO idea! And Richard had absolutely NO idea what that number meant hahaha. So as a barrage of nurses swoop in, my mom and Amy had to explain I was only 3 centimeters away from delivery!
I did feel a few contractions the last couple minutes before I was wheeled off. Uncomfortable, like a burning sensation, but definitely not the worse pain I've ever felt. And I did feel a lot of "pressure." To which the nurses said, "don't do anything! don't push!" My OB arrived in the nick of time and they wheeled me off for surgery. All I can say is for me, the epidural (which took 3 tries to insert) hurt WAY worse than what few contractions I had. And the cocktail they gave to numb me up didn't work after 3 doses. So I needed 2 doses of another cocktail - which FINALLY worked. And the extraction of the babies felt like my ribs were cracking. But the babies were born safely, and aside from a brief scare of low blood pressure during the night, were otherwise healthy. They were in the NICU for 9 days and came home to a very happy and scared mama and papa.
